The ipod now seems to be frozen and unresponsive. I have tried the method of pressing the select and menu button together but to no avail. HELP!!!!

The same happened to my ipod. what I did I left the ipod run out of battery and then I charged it again. the ipod started working normal again.

If the computer had automatically downloaded updates, then when you turn your computer off there may be a pause as the computer downloads the updates, but then you will get something saying the computer will turn off automaticaly when the downloads are done.
As far as your Ipod, I would suggest taking out the battery and leaving it out for a minute. Then put it back in and see what happens.
