A general comment? That depends. Was that general comment meant to be inflamatory or was it made out of lack of knowledge?
If it was made out of ignorance, then yes. I fell it is better to defend myself by informing the person about how wrong they are.
If it is an inflamatory comment designed to hurt me, then I usually don't say anything. What they said shows that they really are no better than me and do not deserve the knowledge that I could equip them with. After all, their mind is probably closed and anything I say would not make a difference. So I say nothing.

No. Neither do I defend myself with remarks made to me, especially if they are ridiculous because that would validate the speaker.
I do, however, enjoy constructive criticism.
I also enjoy watching people get ticked off when they cannot handle general or specific comments. Very funny stuff.

Not really but I do sometimes feel the need to defend whomever I feel is being "attacked" by certain comments (ie. if someone makes a racial slur or says something really ignorant and unfair about someone else).

Sometimes I do, which is why I avoid conversation altogether at times. I could say I'm getting better about not thinking that way, but I really don't know.

Not unless I'm pretty sure it was aimed at me. And even then, not always. Sometimes it's just not worth the effort!

I stand up to be counted, if someone I like and respect is being attacked...

Depends what sort of comment it is and whether or not it was an incriminating one.
