"Great expectations" by Charles Dickens. Forget about the film - the book is one of the best 19th cxentury novels; no film can give you an inkling of the greatness of this book - particularly not with as pale an actress as Gwyn!

The character you mention sounds like Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estelle.

Anyway, the book is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
