There were twelve teams in the first football league and they all played at the same time on opening day as it were:

There is no definitive 'first match' because the first set of fixtures were played simultaneously on 8th September 1888. However, the first goal in this day of fixtures can reasonably be attributed to Jack Gordon of Preston North End. Preston went on to win the first, and second, league championships; and were runners-up for the next three years. Sunderland and Aston Villa dominted the League before 1900.
The first twelve teams in the League (and therefore the ones who fulfilled the first fixtures) were : Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Burnley, Accrington (NOT Accrington Stanley, as is commonly thought), Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Notts County, Derby County and Stoke.
It is testament to the durability of English teams that all of these teams with the exception of Accrington are still playing in the League system, and Accrington have a team in the form of Accrington Stanley.

i can name 1 team and give you the year it was Preston north end on the 8th of September 1888 they went on to win the league that year unbeaten only other team to do that is the arsenal I'm lcfc fan myself well someones got to ain't they
