Does one need to find oneself in the present moment only so not to give more weight to either the past or the future? Does one always truly need to eliminate desire to avoid disappointment? To limit your choices so not to be burdened by them? Where does one begin and stop trying to live full life and not to suffer its inevitable consequences? Or is it possible at all? Does one truly have to have nothing in order to have the world?

Early greek philosophers viewed life with thier backs turned toward the future and the past is all they knew or could see. Trying to figure out what is going to happen was not practiced. Life balance is a personal thing. You will feel balanced when you learn what your capabilities are and believe what is the truth. Some people claim they can see into the future. Who am I to deny them that belief or fantasy? Desire becomes disappointment when you want something or something to happen and you believe it will come or will be, but then doesn't. Adversely, when something you want comes, the belief that you KNEW it would is a way of feeling good about it and yourself.
That does not mean it is true that you predicted the future, but it makes you feel good, and you may be a good educated guesser.
Being human here on Earth, things, situations, and generally, life
will happen. If you are content with this, you are. If not, try to change it by "making things happen".
Does the gambler at the racetrack or the craps table really believe that by yelling the horses name or the number where his chips lie will make that horse win, or make the ball stop on his number. What will happen will happen regardless, but most of us choose not to believe that, because it is not as fun, and it does not give us the good feeling we get when we win, even though we feel bad when we lose. We feel more alive and in control. Problems arise from this sometimes, sometimes not. Who really is in control, I do not know. Nor do I much care. I am only an egg. Life is good and bad. It is forever interesting.

Living in the moment is all we have. The past is gone and I truly feel it needs to stay there. The future is inevitable and will happen no matter what...the question is what do you want your future to consist of?!? Disappointment is a way of learning and desire should never be eliminated. If it is then we'd have nothing to aspire to. Limiting choices only inhibits imagination...I feel anything is a possibility. All consequences are not bad ones and if we limit how we live our life only to avoid a negative outcome then we are limiting the possibilities. Pain or disappointment should be used as a learning tool of what not to do again, and then we keep plugging along. If you have nothing then you realize what is truly important to you and you can go from there to reach the goals and dreams you feel are worthwhile. Good Luck!

you live in the present, you can't have the past, and the future is inevitable. When you desire something, you care about the gain or loss, but when you enjoy either gain or loss, you have equal enjoyment in all. Choice is important, and it only becomes complicated when your choices interfer with each other or you are failing to decide on a choice for this moment. You life your life whenever you wish to. Everything is possible. When you want for nothing you can enjoy everything that you get.

Try reading the Bhagavad- Gita

it will cleary give you some ideas and a huge inspiration to realize that the truth self is sometimes awakened through loss

things in this world are imperminent and so are the attachments that go with them

the goal is freedom from consequence or sin

the goal is to reach a point of transcendance

one must lose to ego to reach the inner self or the soul

The present moment is the only time we have. The past is fixed, and can therefore be relied upon for information. The future is infinitely mutable, and therefore unreliable. We use the information from the past to shield us from uncertainties, and to give us a light into the uncertain future, for which we can safely plan only with the knowledge that we may be wrong. To ponder the reasons for doing or not doing is pointless if we only deprive ourselves of the joy of discovering new things, new ways to do things, and new ways to enjoy Life. Even the tortoise moved forward not a step until he stuck his neck out. Given all that, I say 'If you want to do something, goferit. Whatever the outcome, you will have learned something'.

Life balance is a difficult proposition. I think that we all need to learn to be a bit easier on ourselves and think carefully about what balance means in our lives. Having nothing in order to have the world does not sound balanced to me - it sounds like all or nothing.

I think many of us look for balance in the days and moments of our lives - I find it is more helpful if I look for balance in weeks or months, or even in an overall lifetime. We can not specialize in anything while our energy is diffused in the practice of balance. We focus on a particular task for as long as it needs our attention and then we can find balance in a different activity or resting. Over the course of a week or even a lunar cycle of a month we can get a better view of how balanced our lives are. Maybe we spent a week engrossed in work, and the next spent more time on relaxing, the following week really focus on the family and the following our friends - that is still a balanced life.

We are the sum total of our experiences and our past - and we are planners by nature as we try to live our dreams. We can not live in the past or collapse ourselves into the future with all eggs in one basket., but we do balance those things automatically, all the time - as we see lessons we have learned crop up and we find opportunities to perpetuate our dreams.

I think at the core here is that many of us think of balance, when perhaps we should be thinking about flow. Allowing life to flow through us, enjoying the flow of events and relationships without preconceived notions, plans, fears or agendas. That, to me, is more in keeping with the idea of simiply being and being able to live in the now. Undertaking to do the things we do simply because we love them and allowing the love and life to take us where it may.

Peace!

I ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE WITH JULIAN (the first answer).

Everything is absolutely not possible..I can't unburn a match...nor can I play in the NBA with my poor basketball skills!

Everyone lives in the present all the time...it's an illusion to even discuss the past or future as far as "living in it". You either have possibility or you don't.

Who ever said one should eliminate desire at all? Who said one should avoid disappointment? Why not strive for it?...I'm not kidding...

Breakdowns are evidence that you're trying...learn to MANAGE the breakdowns!, not avoid them!

Limiting your choices is good! It keeps you from being stupid and gets you focused!

Does limiting your choices mean you're not living a life of possibility?...nope...it just means you know which possibilities are not worth it or just plain silly.

You want some good advice?...here it is...

*PRACTICE BEING COURAGEOUS!*

"Being your best" means "being without fear" and that means being courageous.

Simple, plain, and powerful.

There...I just gave the best answer! VOTE FOR ME!

We are shackled to our attatchments by our wants ans western values.
Indeed to attain a state of contentment and peace of mind one must detatch from the normal concepts of social normality.
One must see through different eyes.
Sadly the picture is soooo demoralising that few are able to take the bold step of looking directly at the truth of what is going around in their lives

I believe that the key is to have an open mind. Be willing to experience life...The deprivation, the humiliation, the loneliness of being human...And it doesn't hurt toexperience the tough stuff, because th lower you go, the higher you can get when things turn around.
