It depends on where you live? New construction codes on this vary from town to town. A real good idea would be 1 per bedroom, and 1 per floor interconnected. So if you have a 3 beedroom 2 story house with a basement you would need 6. Some townships require them in the attic as well, instead of smoke detectors in the attic you want to install a heat sensor, smoke detectors will give false positives during the summer months in an attic. the interconnected smoke detectors I am referring to are the 120volt with battery back up. Interconnect them so that if one goes off, they all go off!

The Codes do not vary from city to city they are very clear in the NFPA guidelines.......One in each bedroom, One within 15ft of all bedrooms, One per floor even unfinished Basements, they do go into more detail for even more location as for Vaulted ceiling and such, you can look on their website....NFPA.com for more info
