I am moving to Denver, selling all my stuff and planning on starting over with very few possessions. How do I maintain a life of "not-wanting?"

I have maintained a minimum possesion lifestyle by virtue of two characteristics: I hate stuff I don't need, and I keep myself minimally employed. The latter helps keep the perception of need accurate.

I think that's not even a simplistic/minimalist lifestyle.. not even frugal.. I think you live pretty cheap there. I just recently move to north america and have to adapt with the "should have everything for live to be perfect" culture. Married with a white caucasian guy who has everything (literally everything, even 3 different coffee makers for 3 different coffee tastes) and when we got married I told him that I wanted to live simplistic lifestyle, so we moved to a smaller apartment, got ride of most off stuff. and only kept the things that we really need. Right now, we only have literally 3 plates, 2 mugs, several spoons and forks, and necessary utensils, we clean after we use them, store the rest of the stuff only for holidays use. have only few things in life that's really-really necessary and we begin to appreciate things more. There's nothing wrong to life minimalist. but if you can afford to get your basic needs then go for it (like buy a simple little house and not sleep on the road or at your sister's house).

It was just in the news last week a group of friends made a New Year's resolution in Jan 2006 not to buy ANYTHING.

They exempted food, medical supplies and reasonable personal consumables like toothpaste.

Many of them made it with only one or two "lapses" for things that broke.

You might want to try that. It probably helps a lot if you do it with some friends. They said they were doing it again this year. If you do a news search you might be able to hook up with them.

My first question would be What is your motivation for doing this? Is this going to be realistic for you? Do you have a spouse or children? Is this spiritually motivated?

It's OK to want things and to have things as long as "things" are not your greatest treasures or desires.

Good luck to you in whatever you do.
