a. Is wrong as the opposing force occurs at the same time and that is an action not a force although forces are associated with it.
b. Is wrong as gravity acts upon the ball at all times regardless of the action of spiking the ball. Remember gravity is not a Force it is the cause of the force big misconception that will cause problems later if you don't get right.
