In my view, the only reason to do this is to avoid financial responsibility during the separation. If your spouse is irresponsible, you absolutely should get a legal separation. The only way to do this, in my view, is with the help of an attorney.
Having said that, keep in mind that once you retain an attorney, things get ugly real fast. You get one and then your spouse will get one and then you're off to the races. If there is any way to avoid this, then avoid it. But if your spouse is just a flake and will run up debts and wildly spend money that you will have to pay later, then by all means, you'd better do it. If your credit is already shot, you might avoid this and look instead into a bankruptcy later on. Not a great option but worth checking into. Don't make any assumptions without legal help though.
If you can separate amicably, try to make that happen. If you can avoid the use of attorneys, it'll save you a lot of money and grief. And in my experience, once an attorney is involved, things usually don't get reconciled. I have very little respect for attorneys, especially divorce attorneys.
Think about why you married this person in the first place and see if just maybe there might be anything left of what attracted you two. If your spouse is an addict or abusive or cheats then dump him or her. Failing those things, take a break from each other and come back to this after the dust has settled and see if you can't work it out.
Divorce is hell but I understand that a bad marriage is hell too.
Good luck to you both.

Actually, unless you're wanting to shell out a bunch of money, either do it yourself, or go to a paralegal service in your area. As for doing it yourself, it's easy....go to your courthouse, in the family law section, and ask them for the paperwork. It's fill in the blank, and easy to do. They can't help you by answering legal questions, but they can make an appointment for you to talk to someone who can help you fill out the paperwork.
You file the paperwork with them (and there is a fee for this) and your spouse is served.
I did my divorce this way, and although it took some time to fill out the paperwork, I picked it up, filled it out and filed it the same day.
A paralegal service is also nice, because it won't cost you as much as an attorney will, but you will get the help you need in filing the paperwork, and might give you piece of mind if you're unsure about doing it yourself.
A legal seperation is just as paper-intensive as a divorce is. It's basically a divorce. When you go to get the actual divorce when you have a seperation, it's easier.
Hope that helps.

See your Attorney and it is a simple thing and a smart thing to give you time to find out if you really want a divorce and freedom to see other people or like the single life again.

Get a solicitor, and ask for separation agreement.
You don't even have to live separately. Just remember when you last had been intimate with your husband.
