I just got a new MacBook. A large picture frame fell on top of it and now the 13" lcd screen needs to be replaced! I took it to the Apple store and they said it would cost me around $1,000 to fix! Almost the price of the computer itself. Should I get it fixed somewhere else besides the "authorized" apple repair places? I'm so upset. :(

Here's the problem, most warranties only cover manufacturer defects only and unless you are willing to replace the LCD yourself then you are out of luck. Even if it is still under warranty, it wouldn't be covered because it's "accidental" damage and is not covered by the standard warranty. However, if you purchased the extra AppleCare warranty, that might and I emphasize MIGHT have covered it. As for getting it fixed elsewhere, that'll pretty much void what you have left on the warranty UNLESS they are an authorized Apple repair center, some places are so check around.

I've heard good things about MacResQ, http://www.mbresq.com/ you are only liable for shipping charges, they will contact you when they know how much it will cost to fix.

Other than that... consider selling it broken on eBay, at least get SOME of your money back and put that towards on new one. You're in a very tight spot my friend. Almost the same thing happened to my laptop and I was told it would cost $800 to fix, I ended up buying a new laptop and using the old one (it still worked if plugged into an external display) as a desktop but not for long... not for long.

Take it to a computer store where they sell and repair. Chances are good that they will buy it from you at a greatly reduced price, and then you buy a new one. At least you will get something out of it. Use the hard drive out of your old machine in the new one. They will likely repair it with used parts from their store and resell it. You both come out ahead.
Repairing for near the cost of new doesn't make sense. Good luck

Take it in, yet reserve on the Geniousbar first!! in the experience that they arent busy, they're going to restoration it instantaneous. If no longer it is going to bypass in th back and be repaired later (take it to an Apple shop!)

If you bought electronic insurance, use it, if not, buy a new laptop and weep over your losses.. sorry, thats pretty much the only 2 options.

Your homeowners insurance policy should cover this minus the deductible.
