I got a new notebook and I don't want to mess it up like my desktop. Will it shut itself off, or does it cause harm to simply close it up in the middle of something?

By shutting the lid you will put the laptop into stand by mode. This is fine. All the apps that you are working with will stay fine, they will be there when you resume with your work.

The truth is, that you should put it into standby, it doesn't take long and it is safer, less likely to corrupt data.
