time cannot be divided equally if they are in school

That will never hapen. You will only get the visitation that was approved by the judge. But the mother can let you have more if she chooses. What was agreed to in court was the minimun visitation. IF you are a "good" father then she shouldn't mind letting you have more. If she doesn't trust you , then you will not get any more then what the judge said. She could even go back to court and have that reduced if you're not a "good" father any more. It sucks but that's the way it is.

Divorce is so hard on kids. Is there anyway to work with the mom on this if the courts have already made their decision?

Don't worry ... childhood does not last forever.. Someday the adult relationship will far out weight the child one.. Time will heal all...
Divorce is hardest on the kids but they will not be a kid forever.

If you want to spend more time with your children, I don't see why your ex-wife would disagree. Have you asked her?
