I answer!! Never , water breaks down carpet backing causing early wear , padding soaks up water holding in moisture and causing mold . DO NOT LISTEN TO CARPET CLEANERS! Use only chemical cleaners , dry cleaners . Things that are liquid cleaners must dissipate immediatly!!! I see a new floor everyday as an INSTALLER , water is not safe for any non water sealed flooring which NO carpet is water proof!!! once again do NOT listen to carpet cleaners , they know nothing about cartpet care beyond the exterior problem , which once they are gone is no longer their problem.
Once again Dry chemical cleaners only!!
or cleaners with disspating gasses which can be found from a PROFFESIONAL carpet store and/or installer.

My mother and I have been using water to clean up spills on carpeting for as long as I can remember. I have not had good results from steamcleaning companies for wall-to-wall though. The carpet only looked clean for a few days. But if you spill somethingl, water is a no-brainer.

yes as long as you suck the water up the best way is to rent a carpet shampooer or get it professionally cleaned
