why does your hair stand up right before lightning strikes you? its for a school project and i need to know. just give me like 3 or 4 thorough sentences why. thank you

Your hair is responding to the electrical potential difference that has occured between the earth and the clouds. The earth (which you are standing on) is positively charged and the cloud base becomes negatively charged. Once the potential difference is large enough nature will seek to equalize the imbalance and a large flow electrons occurs...lightning. You can simulate this by taking a plastic comb and rubbing it on a wool sweater. Which gives it a charge. Then pass the comb near your hair.

It stands up because of static electricity. Tesla used to pump electricity through the air so everyone in the area would have free electricity. Everyones hair would stand lightning is just an electrical discharge. Before the discharge the static builds. You can do the same thing with plastic or nylon. Rub your feet on a nylon carpet or astroturf. Then put your hand near someones head, the hair will stand up.

I once came close to being struck by lightning and my hair did stand on end. The lightning missed me by only a few feet.
