I am forced to get rid of cable because the price went up to $47.95.Thats rediculous!I have never had DSL and see one plan that claims "up to" 1500kbps for $32.95.I did a speed check of my cable and it was running at approx 2700kbps.I know Im not going to be happy but is there anyone that has DSL and can tell me if my regular speeds will likely be much slower? If its going to be slow as molasses, then I may as well just save and go for $10.00 month dialup. Thanks

The wonders of the controlled Internet..

Well, DSL runs any place up to 28.8 Kbps on the average. Not all provider will be the same as well it really depends as to where you live.

If you have experienced Cable and you switch to DSL you will be very disappointed with DSL.

Have you tried to see if you can get the high speed from Yahoo? If per say it is in your area you can get it for $14.00 or so per month.

Other than that, do a search on Google for High Speed providers in your area and check out all that pops up.

It's your investment, choose the service that works best for you.

Good luck!

DSL speeds depend a lot on how far you are from the CO (central office) where the phone companies server is. Generally they wont actually tell you where the CO is so you'll have to rely on them telling you that you'll have a good speed. As long as you're within (I think) about 6,000 feet of a CO (and if you can get DSL you probably are) then you should get a pretty good speed.

The line quality of the lines in your house can also effect performance. I live in a house that's pretty old and I have a really good DSL connection so you probably don't have to worry too much unless you have frayed phone wiring or a bad connection from the outside lines to your house. If that's the case you can have the phone company install a new line. It'll cost a little extra but your speeds will improve dramatically.

The speed quoted by them is the max that your line is capable of giving you, not the actual speed you'll see. The speed you'll see will probably be close, but don't expect exactly 1500kbps.

Check out the link below for some really good info on DSL. You can even post in the forums where actual phone company employees will answer your questions.

DSL is pretty fast I am switching soon also due to the cable rates. I convinced my neighbor to use DSL instead of dial up and she likes it. I can get DSL for 19.99/month as compared to 45.00 for high speed and basically the same thing!

i am on DSL at home. It is slower than Cable...but much faster than dial-up. If you are looking to save a buck...go DSL...most users will not notice or care about the differences between DSL and cable.

It also depends on how close you are to the main hub...the closer the better.

Call your DSL provider and ask them how far you are.

Let us know what you decide.

The quality of the phone line is a huge factor on your speed. A bee line from the jack to the network interface, located on the outside of your home, gray box, says interface on it...Where the phone line enters your home. The phone line from your phone jack for your computer to the interface should be good quality cat5 or better and very easy to replace if needed. the jk has red, green, yellow and black terminals. interface has the same. with cat5 wire, connect red terminal to blue wire and green terminal to blue/white wire. same on interface. the outside, call you phone company to test you dsl quallity.
