Social workers hope to help other people with social problems -from child abuse, through homelessness, addiction, mental health problems and ageing to death and bereavement. Their reasons for choosing to do this are as many and varied as are the 'problems'. More often than not, however, there is an underlying strong social concience and a desire to see social justice. However, if people realised what the job actually entailed, particularly in the public sector, most of them wouldn't bother and would choose to do something else. At the end of the day, the most anyone can hope for is to make very small differences to other people's lives - the big stuff is down to the people themselves. You either find a way to deal with that fact or you get out - which is why there's a shortage of social workers in the UK (plus the money's rubbish!).

As others have said, social workers hope to help improve the lives / circumstances of others in the world around them. They often have a sense of social justice and altruism. Social workers also frequently put in many hours for unimpressive pay.
Social workers are engaged in a number of different topics and areas - family life & domestic problems, child welfare, schools, the criminal justice system, health care, death & bereavement, and advocacy are just a few. For example, a social worker could work in an HIV/AIDS outreach clinic to help provide services & find housing for hiv/aids patients; or work in a school with children who have emotional disturbances.

social workers help ensure that children within troubled families get proper food, clothing, shelter, treatment, and education. at the worst, it's the social worker's job to remove these kids from their residences and find them orphanages or foster homes. people choose this job because it's necessary and helps kids with very littler have a chance in the world, but it requires a taste for reality that goes far beyond most folks'

The answer is within your question. They hope to help people in their society and are prepared to work for their rights. But---------
too many of them went in it to feel superior and to feel better about themselves. It's like ambulance attendants. Or
group therapists. Or any person that wants to be a hero. BUT that doesn't mean they can't help. But there are many out there who seek to out-fox the social workers. It's a game but it's actually stealing. THOSE social workers who find them out are REAL burned-out.
Do you want to help people? For the right reasons? Then think of Mother Teresa and start building up from there until it includes a paycheck for the rent. Then you are helping. Even Jesus would agree with me on that! (And He rarely agrees with me on anything!!) Good Luck!! I have a good feeling about you!! @8-)
