I personally let my baby sleep in the bassinette for about a month...then moved them to crib. But it's your choice you have to do what you think is best...One warning though...child experts are now putting out warnings on letting your baby sleep in their car seat...windpipe blockage is a possibility. so don't let your baby sleep in there, recline it back in the car, and on long trips wake your baby and get it out of the seat periodically...

If you want the baby right next to you a bassinet is the way to go if your gonna have your baby in another room I would do the crib. My girls didn't have a bassinet at all they both used a crib. I bought a bassinet for my son because we were living in an apartment getting ready to buy a house but the apartment was too small for a crib because he shared the room with us. Luckily we bought a house before he outgrew the bassinet, but I really enjoyed having him right there I got more sleep that way.

Have that, and a crib and make your bed safe for co-sleeping before your baby comes. That way you are prepared for whatever you and your baby prefer. A smaller portable bassinet may be good as well. Depends on you. You can use a laundry basket in a pinch ;-)
Just because you think you will never co-sleep doesn't mean you shouldn't baby proof your bed. Someday you may decide to nurse in bed because you are tired, then you may fall asleep and it is always better to be safe than sorry. So baby proof your bed and keep your other options open!
Personally I co-sleep with a crib as a side car (mostly I end up in the crib). I also had a swing, a crib and a bassinet. I used them all at different points. Sometimes even co-sleeping babies want some space. Sometimes mom needs to put baby somewhere. And sometimes babies with mild reflex or other issues sleep better in a swing (or a swing, in the bathroom, with the shower running *lol*)
Just make sure that all potential sleep locations are as safe as possible.

I prefer the crib because that is where he'll sleep until he's big enough for his own bed. Bassinets can only be used during the early months because it'll gets too easy for an infant to climb out. Don't put your baby in YOUR bed unless you plan on letting him sleep with you for the next few years. You would be surprised at how a baby can let you know his preferences when you experiment with different places for him to sleep.

I would say get her use to sleeping where ever you place her. My daughter did sleep with me the first 4 months at night, but during the day I would put her in her crib, the cradle,or the bassinet and she would sleep where ever. This is great if you travel a lot. But do what makes you feel better. Good luck

my baby is 15 and a half (years), but I remember this, WHATEVER IS EASIER ON YOU!!!!! (especially if you're nursing). I didn't like any of the three bassinets I got at my shower, they all seemed to pose asphyxiation threats. I moved my son's crib about 2 ft from the side of my bed, and that's where he slept at night (convenient for every 2 hr nursing), after he started sleeping through the night (at about 2 months), I moved it into the nursery (I nursed him in there during the day so he would get used to the surroundings), he had a porta crib/playpen that I got when he was about a month old, that stayed in whatever room I was in during the day. My daughter on the otherhand, refused to be in anything that resembled a cage, so she would only sleep in a carseat until she got a big-girl bed (with rails) when she was 1 1/2.

My daughter is six months old and just moved to the crib in her room on Christmas night. Before that she slept in her pack n play bassinet next to my bed. I heard that having your baby in your bedroom (not in your bed) can help to prevent SIDS. She took the transition fine because I began putting her in her crib for daytime naps and when it was time to switch she was already used to sleeping in it. Good Luck and Hope this helps!

we didn't have a bassinet so I took my crib and divided it in half so to speak which gave my 3 # 13 oz baby the close feeling you get in a bassinet.

With my first, she slept in the pack n play bassinett for 4 months, and was a pretty bad sleeper (still is). the second went into the crib right away & is a great sleeper. My third (one week old now) is spending time in the bassinett and the crib, and he sleeps sort of good so far.

You will be up and down at night with a newborn A LOT. It's best to have them either in a bassinet in your room or in bed with you. You will all get more sleep this way.
