The game broadcasters put the yellow line for the first down line to let the audience know if the team is close to the first down. All they have to do is make a projection on the screen that they are gonna broadcast have the yellow line. Really sometimes they forget to turn it on and the line doesn't show up. But so most of the time they turn on that function for you.

Check this website out, it explains how the 1st and 10 lines appear on TV. Apparently, there are at least 8 cameras and 4 personnel making sure that the lines appear correctly.

The yellow line isn't on the field, it is put there by the station so you can see where the first down line, etc. are. They don't turn yellow at the stadium, it is digitally enhanced.

Yeah, the line isn't really on the field. It is just put in on when you see it on television. It is just a digital line there so you can see. It is alot easier to tell when your at the game in person 'cause you can see the entire field unlike when you watch it on tv.

they aren't actually visible on the field; the TV station puts it on there to make it easier to tell where the 1st down would occur. on the field, they have the guys who hold the chain on the sideline that show where 1st down would be.

It is a green screen effect. Similar to how local weathermen stand in front of a moving video... that is green screen too.
