other than a coil what else can cause my car to have to try many times to get it to start

It could be several things. Bad spark plugs/wires, ignition timing off, fouled up fuel system, thats a few of the things to check to start. If it isnt any of those things you may need to get it checked out by your local mechanic.

Poor plugs/wires and poor fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is not holding due to leaky injectors or fuel line leak then it takes a few cranks to get pressure up enough to start.

Take it to a mechanic and have it scanned for codes. If there are no codes telling you what is wrong, he can put it on an engine analyzer. This should tell him exactly what is wrong, so that you are not needlessly replacing parts.

Your timing could be off, or your fuel/air mixture could be bad.
