First, you need to verify the hard drive you put in your laptop is approved by the Manufacturer. You can find this out on their website.

Next, go to the Manufactures website and check for the latest Bios upgrade for your specific model and name of laptop. The reason for this, is that larger hard drives were not seen by the bios until you installed the update.

After you verify that the hard drive is now being seen by the Bios, you can format it, partion it if needed and install the Operating system.

If you have an original CD for the Operating system and not an upgrade CD, your CD should be bootable. You just need to verify in the Bios that you have set to boot from the CD enabled and after the Floppy and or Hard drive.

If your CD is not bootable, you will need to create a boot disk for your OS that contains format and fdisk on it.

Try this website for this: http://www.bootdisk.com/

Did you take out the jumper thing and put it in the correct place on the back of the hard drive (unless laptop hds are different then i would just go with the boot disk solution but check this first)

Go to the HD manufacturer's web site and download the software to make a boot disk.

Is it a PATA or a SATA Laptop HDD? If it is a SATA, you need the Serial drivers from the manufacturer's website , because windows xp does not support SATA by default.

you might need to format the dirve. if you have a windows install cd, go in it and choose install windows then find the drive and format it and then quit, it might appear, make sure to just format it and not install windows again though
