All a chmapionship does is say that they were the best for that particular season, or in some cases got hot at the right time of the year. A great player plays great all the time regardless if they win it all or not. Although Marino didn't win one he's still one of the greatest signal-callers, unfortunately for him the ENTIRE team wasn't great enough to win a championship. Karl Malone was unlucky enough to face Jordan twice in his Finals apperances with the Jazz, and the Pistons during his dysfunctional season with the Lakers. Steve Nash is still playing so he still has the opportuinty to win a few championships. In other words a championship doesn't define a career, a career defines a career.

This question is/will be debated on every NFL program this month. If you are talking about the team as a whole, I believe that a championship is the criteria that matters most. As far as a individual athletes, a championship is the ultimate goal, but it does not define a career. Looking specifically at NFL quarterbacks Manning and Marino are much better than most quarterbacks that have won a NFL championship.

Yes and no.....
Remember, in team sports...you do not, most of the time, rely on individuals. It is the team effort that wins. Do I think Ben R. is better than Dan M? Absolutely not! It takes a team to win a championship in a team sport.
Secondly, I know that you were just referencing a few people that haven't won a championship, but I have to comment anyway. The Mailman, Karl Malone, absolutely SUCKS! He didn't deliver. In fact, if he did deliver, it was just a delivery of crap for the rest of his team.
Anyway....the key is that validation for an individual player does not come from championships. It is a team validation.

No, if you win one you're good, you win two, you're very good,
you win three or more you can consider yourself in the greatness
category when it comes to team sports. Great players on teams who never won championships in team sports are still better than role players and journeyman players on teams who won champioships. For example, Charles Barkley never played on any NBA championship teams when he was in the NBA, and he's one of the great players of alltime. The same applies for other players in other team sports. Dan Marino and Karl Malone are just two examples. Steve Nash still has a chance to win a championship because he is still an active player, and the Suns
are probably among the NBA title contenders when all of their key
players are healthy.

A single championship does not validate much...of course you cannot diminish the skill and, dare I say, luck of a team to make it through to a championship...but your question is regarding greatness...Let me use the last debacle of OSU vs. Florida...the game showed Florida had a great team...and even though OSU didn't show up (at all), The OSU program itself is GREAT...look at the history and tradition.
Another Case in point is this year's Steelers...these guys got lost between last year and this year...they are also losing their keystone this year...but the team itself is GREAT...look at the history
Individual players are great even if the teams for which they play are not..it is all about the history repetive success, regardless single season W vs L...

one player doesn't make a team. You can't say Big Ben is better just 'cause he had a better supporting team. Marino was one of the best QBs ever, and made his team good, but not good enough.

You are asking if a championship team is great but then only comparing players. You can have great players on a bad team. I man does not make a team. But great TEAMS win championships.
