No, the employer is not required to mail your W-2, but most do it for their convenience.

The employer is required to provide you with your W-2 by January 31st.

The IRS is one of the few places where you can meet your deadline by dropping something in the mail the day something is due, so mailing your W-2 meets the deadline, even if you do get it a week later.

They are required to furnish a W-2 . This could be handed to you or mailed.

You may elect to receive it electronically - if your employer wishes to do so. As the prior poster noted, it must be done by the end of January.

Most employers send them out by mail. They must be post mark by Jan. 31st. So you might receive it a week or two after that.
