It reads overfull because you need to start your engine and let the oil filter fill up. Oil filter will hold about 1/2 quart.

Put in 3 quarts, start the engine and let it idle for about 1 minute or 2. Turn off the engine and check the level. It should show just at or under "add oil". Add more as needed, but follow the dipstick. Manuals give you approximations under controlled environments.

Oil filter wasn't changed?...That holds a least half a QT...Don't worry about it this time..Next oil change make sure you install new oil filter, put about half qt. in filter before you screw it on...Then four qt in engine...Idle car for a few mintues and your done...

Wipe the oil from the dipstick with a rag, then try it again. you'll see that the crankcase is empty. You drained the oil, notwithstanding the stick nonetheless has oil on it from earlier you drained it.

Run the motor then check it. Are you sure it is the right dipstick for your vehicle?
