They're too busy watching cars go around an oval track 400 times. Apparently, that's much more entertaining...somehow...

how come no body likes hockey down south? I'm a body in the south and I love hockey. A lot of people down south love hockey but most are not as passionate about it as the people in Canada. The States have so many more sports to choose from than there are people to go around! Not really but I think you get my drift. I have always said I am going to move to Canada so I can go where people appreciate hockey as much as I do. There are some of us hockey fanatics down here just not as many as in Canada.

I'm from FL and I LOOOVE hockey! It's the only sport that I really follow!
I play 3 sports, and hockey isn't one of them! It's not even offered at schools here! I have friends up north who played field hockey, but nope not here. I only have 3 friends here that like hockey AT ALL, the rest have never even seen a game. But they travel hours for football games!
It's hard because:
1. There is never ice. There's actually a huge rink here that has hockey teams. It just opened like 5 years ago, and I seriously think it does less business now than when it opened. I love it, but unfortunately there's not much of a demand.
2. Games never get televised. I mean it seems every college and pro bball & football game that you can imagine is on, but hockey is NEVER on. I have CenterIce, so I can see all the games, but the only station that EVER shows games on cable is Versus (formerly OLN).
3. Everyone here is sooo in love with football and baseball, they don't have time. Especially now with UF beating Ohio State.
It sucks that it has to be that way, but oh well! haha

I take you've never actually been down here in the South huh? There's plenty of Southerners who like hockey and there's lots of Southern hockey teams.

Well if they can't even spell hockey right (Aqua) they aren't interested in learning the high pace and/or complexity of hockey. I mean look what they like. Driving around in circles several hundred times, oo hard to follow, hitting a white ball with a wooden stick and running or catching and throwing, wow. Much more interesting. I know I'm not a super genius but i have the attention span to keep up. Apparently the ones who don't like it are just to slow to handle it, we don't want people like them in it anyways. Not all southern people hate it though.

Because of the warmer climate. Up north playing hockey outside is something you can do as a kid every now and then, but down south that is impossible. The only place to play is in indoor arenas and the fee's are terrible.

I think hockey has to develop as a culture. In canada the kids grow up playing hockey and they have fond memories around it. There's no place for the kids to play hockey in the south. It's like basketball in europe. It wasn't until recently that kids had the opportunity to play the game often. Now basketball is established as part of the culture.

Well, the Carolina Hurricanes and their "redneck hockey" seem to have a pretty large fan base, them being Stanley Cup champions and all. I think hockey is just one of those sports that isn't exactly a southern thing. I mean, really, how can anyone expect a Canadian sport to catch on in a place where there isn't any ice? I personally think that the supposed hockey fans in the south fall into two categories: displaced northerners and people who jump on the bandwagon when their local team is doing well. It's just not a place for true fans like the northern US and Canada.

1. no ice
2. nascar is way too entertaining? i mean it's just soooo exciting watching all those left turns, with the occasional right turn into the wall.
hockey seems to be really slow growing in the south, and even though tampa and carolina have won the cup, many of the players on those teams were canadian, and most of the locals didn't even know that the stanley cup playoffs were going on when interviewed on tv. kinda sad really, considering it's the greatest sport in the world!
