My Windows XP computer randomly produces a series of rapid beeps followed by a single beep, repeatedly. The number of beeps in the series varies from 3-11, and this series repeats 8-12 times. It happens once every 1-3 weeks, on a random schedule. It seems like a software or hardware alarm, but I cannot figure out what's causing it.

You do have a hardware problem. When you boot up, pay attention and it will show you the brand name of your bios chip. Once you know that name, search for that company in your search engine. Once there, click on beep codes. Or another quick way is to type in to your search engine: beep codes for XY&Z.
Here's a little help to get you started:

The cause of beep codes depends on the BIOS on your motherboard, look in your instruction manual to see more, or enter your BIOS and see what it says, then look that up on the internet. The same beep code could mean several different things on different motherboards

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
