My favorite is the ancient asian board game called go (also called igo, wei chi, and baduk). It's easier to learn than chess, but has many more levels of complexity. Plus it has a great handicapping system so two people of wildly different strengths can play a good game.

For groups of more than two or more laid back settings I like Trivial Pursuit or Settlers of Cataan. I also like some of the games that can be played w. the icehouse pieces from Looney Labs.
