There are alot of things you can do to make your computer run faster, without having to install software.

It is hard to tell you much without knowing your hardware configuration.

1. If you are running Windows 2000 or XP you should have more than 512MB of RAM (Physical Memory), it's a good idea to have 1 GB RAM.

2. You need to set your Virtual Memory yourself. Windows never allowcates enough. You will have to base this amount on the size of your hard drive. Generally a 1024MB min and a 2024MB max are sufficient, although I prefer a 2024MB min and a 4024MB max. What you are doing here is instructing your computer to treat a portion of your hard drive as memory. It is not really memory hence the virtual. Go to Control Panel, select System, in the dialog that pops up select the Advanced tab, Select settings in the Performance box, in the dialog that pops up select the Advanced tab, click Change in the Virtual Memory box, select Custom Size, type in your settings and click set.

3. Your Hard Drive should never be more than 80% full. This allows space for virtual memory and temporary files. Your Hard Drive should be defragmented at least once a month or whenever you do major installations or deletions.

4. Temporary Files, Cookies, and Internet History should be deleted at least once a month, more often won't hurt anything.

5. Run MSconfig to change what programs start when the computer is turned on. This is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. It is very easy to stop the wrong process and not be able to access the internet or use your printer.

6. Clean the Registry. This is not something that anyone other than the most advanced users should be doing. Whether you do it yourself or use a program you could do alot more harm than good. If you think you are having problems now wait until you start deleting or modifying registry keys.

Here is a simple explanation of how your memory and hard drive work. Think of an office. Your Hard Drive is your filing cabinet, Virtual Memory is the surface of your desk, and Physical Memory is what you are currently holding in your hands working on.

You can only hold so much in your hands at a time to work on. Anything you do not want to focus on at the moment either has to be put on your desk or filing cabinet for later. If you put something on your desk you can quickly and easily retrieve it later. If you put it back into your filing cabinet it may take time and effort to find it again when you need it.

The bigger the surface of your desk is the more you can set there without putting things back into the filing cabinet. If your filing cabinet and desk are both full you won't be able to work on anything else until you create some space. It also takes a long time to search through a filing cabinet that is jammed full. Defragging your Hard Drive is like going through your filing cabinet and making sure everything is in alphabetic and numerical order, if something is out of place it can take much longer to find.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Download a copy of Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and run those. You could have a bunch of spyware/adware cluttering everything up so these will help you find them and get rid of them.

Next you can get a good disc cleaner. I use Dustbuster XP though it may not be the best it is automatic and I've never had it remove anything that prevented any of my programs from working. It usually frees up between 100 and 900 mbs of space for me.

You might also try a registry cleaner. I use Abexo Free Registry Cleaner. It'll scan your registry for entries that are no longer valid and remove them for you and then compress your registry to remove the empty space. That should help speed up your PC too.

Yes, there is.

1) run a system cleaner like Ccleaner, which is a free download.
2) run msconfig, and turn off startup programs not needed at startup.
3) run a registry cleaner, to get rid of all the leftover registry files that are no longer needed.
4) run a spyware program lile AdAware, Spybot, and many others that are free downloads.
5) finally, do a virus/malware scan free on the internet, Trend Micro Housecall, is a good one.

Here are some ideas:

1. Decrease the number of program which launch at startup. Start Menu > Run > enter "msconfig" (without quotation marks) > [Enter] > "Startup" tab > uncheck any program you don't need to launch at startup.

2.Scan your computer for viruses, spyware, Trojan Horses and any other malicious file.

3. Decrease the number of visual effects. Right click "My Computer" > Properties > "Advanced" tab > under Performance, click [Settings] > "Visual Effect" tab > uncheck any special visual effects you don't need > [Apply] > [O.K.] > Reboot.

4. Disable the Indexing Windows Service. Start Menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scroll down until you see "Indexing Service" > right click and select "Stop" and then "Disable."

5. Optimize the paging file, read (http://winston-blog.blogspot.com/2006/09/boost-windows-xp-performance-by.html)

Have you ran an antivirus or spyware program? Other than that I've tried all of the "make your computer faster" programs, and they've never been successful for me. I always end up using the factory disk to wipe out my computer and start over from scratch. That fixes any problems or viruses and your computer is like new...but you do lose everything.

go to your windows\temp folder and delete everything in it EVERYTHING.

change your virtual memory to one specific size (usually double your RAM).
download ad-aware from lavasoft and run that.
Uninstall any unneeded programs.

run defrag

I've been told to do this for games but I heard that getting more "RAM", speed's up your computer, it's kind of expensive but its worth it. Especially for laptops.
