I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 short box, regular cab. It is time to replace the fuel filter, and I am wondering if the fuel pump is in the gas tank. No matter where it is, I need to know if it's electronic (the gas won't flow unless the engine is running, with no filter on that could be bad). I understand that a little gas will probably run out, but I don't want the whole tank flowing into my mouth. And also, do all GMC Sierra's "clunk" when you shift into Reverse? It has a 5.3 auto trans.

If you want to release the pressure the trick I use is to pull the fuse out of the fuse panel and run vehicle (2-3 minutes usually0 till it runs out of gas. Then when you want to restart put fuse back in and turn key on, wait 15-20 seconds for syatem to repressurize and you are ready.

It depends on a few things. 1. What is the ventilation like. 2. Does he already have the replacement or does he need to leave it off for awhile while he goes to buy the replacement? 3. How handy is your husband? If he already has the replacement and the room is well ventilated and he has a clue what he is doing then the amount of time that the truck will sit with fumes exiting the tank should be small and if ventilated it should not pose much of any problem. But I would always error on the side of caution when it comes with working with gas. Most people don't realize just how little it take for a huge explosion...

Everyone answered about the fuel pump, but did you wonder about the filter also??? The filter will be on the outside so it will be easier to change. Yes there will be some pressure in the line, I never found out how to relieve this. So I just try and take it off slowly, so when I get it loose, it will just trickle into a pan. One still has to be careful so you don't spray it into your eyes or do not work around open flames or heat sources.!!!! P.S., after the pressure is released, the fuel will quit running out, so you don't have to worry about losing the whole tank of gas.

Your fuel pump is in the tank. Yes it is also electric. The filter should be in line. The clunking usually is a sign of one of two things. Rear end wear or U-joint wear.
