In snow, 4wd will help. On ice, 4wd might help a little bit.
The thickness of ice doesn't matter. Ice is ice. You are on top of it, not driving through it like snow.

Nope.. not a all. Once you start to slide on ice, and especially with an inch of ice, 4-wheel drive will be of no help at all. If you had studded tires, that would help, but other than that, on ice, you may as well have skates on.

yes, because you have the weight of the engine on the front wheels, giving you traction. front wheel drive is next best. also since all wheels are turning you have a better chance of one having traction

Yes but beware: 4 wheels turning will get you going faster. Four wheels locked-up stops the car just as fast 2wd or 4wd. 4wd gets you moving faster, faster. And 4wd are usually heavier, they need alot more room to stop.

yes, 4 wheel makes a difference, BUT only if you have studs. with regular tires, you're going to slide regardless of drives.
