Since our worst enemy is our EGO which is hidden inside each and every one of us, it is in that sense I feel, that we might be our own worst enemy.

In some ways we may sabotage ourselves (thinking negatively, engaging in bad/unhealthy habits & addictions etc). In that way you may be your own worst enemy. You cause your own unhappiness. If this is the case, you should try being a friend to yourself instead by thinking positive & being good to yourself inside & out (avoid things that are bad for you & do things that are good for you.) It seems like common sense but look how many people are unhappy & destroying themselves (with alcohol, drugs etc etc)...

It may probably mean that we ourselves could sometimes lose self-control when trying to resist temptations or desires. And it may be also to show that we are our worst enemy because we know absolutely nothing about ourselves and its always important to know oneself before knowing another.

My interpretation of it is that humans are capable of nearly anything, including destroying ourselves and our planet. Just think of all the problems in the world today: war, global warming, poverty, hunger etc. -- all of them and many more are caused by humans. Some people think the end of the humans race will be caused by our own stupidity and ignorance; however I disagree.

All the hard feelings and sorrow we have is basically comprised of reactions within ourselves. They depend on our outlook towards life.
E.g. we can, if we really want, control our own reactions and channelize our orientation towards self-realization and use our mind to realize our true self if we direct it inwards.
Therefore it is us and us alone who can determine how we fare.
This is the crux of the maxim.
