dependson if its a copper coil or a mirena coil.

The basics is that it irritates the womb lining so that it is inhospitable for the fertilised egg to embed itself in so therefore the egg is expelled the same way as it if wasbn't fertilised. The mirena coil also is impregnated with progesterone which again makes the womb lining inhospitable for the egg.

No contraception method is full proof unless you consider Abstinence as an option. Coils are supposedly up to 97 percent of the time effective. ‘Up to’ if you have been to any sale that suggests say up to 50 percent off could mean anything from no discount to 50 percent off. There is always a margin of error. The risk with coils or intra-uterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is that pregnancy does take place it can be something called an ectopic pregnancy. This is very dangerous even though very rare and a doctor has to be consulted right away.

A coil or IUCD is like a t shaped copper or plastic device which is surgically fitted into the uterus. It is a kind of barrier device which keeps the sperm from keeping its date with the egg. It also prevents the free movement of the egg within the reproductive system of the female. It is a fire and forget method with an effective life of 5-10 years.

I had a terrible experience having the coil fitted. I had it fitted in my teens (in the late 70's/early 80's) and the NHS would not prescribe a "mini" coil, which is recommended for a woman who has not had children. Instead the family planning clinic fitted a full sized coil. I found this to be a painful procedure and there was no form of pain control during the fitting. It became gradually more painful after I left and I was in total agony for about 48 hours, vomiting and fainting from the pain, until my boyfriend took my to an emergency appointment with my own GP. He, through devious means and a telephone call to the pharmacy next door to ignore what the prescription said, acquired a mini coil. He had to remove the first and refit the second while I was virtually unconscious with valium. This was fine at first, but 24 hours later I was in extreme pain again and had to go back to have it removed. However!!!!! I do know that lots of women have them fitted with no problems at all, maybe I was just unlucky?

There is no single explanation of how Mirena works.
Mirena may:
Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
Make the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in benefits like less menstrual bleeding over time)
Stop the release of your egg from your ovary (but this may not be the way it works in most cases)

It is believed that all 3 of these actions may work together to prevent pregnancy.

Rather like a mouse trap, any moving solid object entering a cavity will be trapped by a spring like system rendering it useless for at least a month.
