Why?? With a dial-up you're not getting much work done anyway. So you hook up another computer and do half the work??? Guess I don't understand your objective.

If you are running WinXP on both computers you will want to set-up a home network where the laptop connects to Internet through the desktop.

However, if both systems are online the speed of each will be 1/2. You will need a router to do this.

there isn't enough bandwidth with a dial-up connection to support 2 computers using the Internet.

if you insist the best way to do that would be with an external modem which would connect that to a router that has a RS-232 interface.

way to much money to spend on 56K dial-up service...

Sure, you can even use dial-up for 4 PCs if you want to, yet, still all PC can still be used for surfing the net and even on-line games but with lagged though. Just share your connection using a switch port connected to LAN card on each PC.
