In the County Jail I was in for traffic violations last year they had many things you could purchase, ranging from snack foods to portable radios to writing impliments. In some of the larger prisons you can purchase televisions and the like as well. I'd say probably between 50-75 dollars a week would have you living VERY comfortably..

This depends a bit on the prison (maximum security, minimum security, etc.). Also, a prison commissary would have different items from a jail commissary as a person is generally confined to a prison longer than to a jail. So a person would be best served by checking with the particular prison to see exactly what is offered through that prison's commissary, what can be bought off the street and brought it, and what items are completely unacceptable. The prison will gladly provide this info as they want all prisoners to be in compliance with the rules.

Generally, a commissary will sell food and hygiene items such as candy bars, chips, Kool-Aid, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Prisons are often more reluctant to give out items such as shaving razors, or even toothbrushes, as these can be used as weapons. Some prisons will have a loan period for shaving razors or a somewhat supervised period where a person can shave. Again, alot of this would depends on maximum security, minimum, death row, etc. Some commissaries may also sell items like small radios or books.

Commissaries sell all kinds of items from hygiene products to clothing and small electronics. They are more expensive then out in the world so it would depend on what they buy.

Alot of the money also goes for food, stamps, etc. to compensate for the meals they receive.
