Many of the authors of "classics", particularly Dickinson, wrote them as installments in dime novels in the 1800's and early 1900's. They didn't get paid terribly much, but usually enough to live on. But many "classics" authors died poor and depressed (such as Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain). I believe that the only authors who make money during their lifetime write "popular (non)fiction" ... and "popular (non)fiction" is not usually stuff that makes it into the "classics".

Pablo Neruda and Langston Hughes are both deceased. They don't make any money.
