I have a dell computer with windows pro. I also have a dial-up connection. (dsl not available in the sticks) Sometimes while in the middle of something I will click on anything and my computer will shut down and restart all by itself. Do not necessarily have to be on the net. Can anyone help me?

That is normally the sign of 1 of 2 issues:

1. You've got a hardware problem. I had a system that did this due to a back motherboard. At the very least, you might wish to blow the dust out of the cooling fins and fan, and make sure all fans are working.

2. You've got a virus. There are some viruses that do this. However, normally you get some error message that this is happening. Make sure your AV and service packs are all up to date (take it to a place w/ a high-speed connection for best results).

1. virus - if you have a antivirus program on your computer run a full scan. If you don't have an antivirus program already, I would suggest AVG by Grissoft.

2. A dip in power. Do you have the computer on any kind of battery backup? You could be experiencing dips in your electrical power. They might not be severe enough to blink the lights, but still be enough to effect your computer.

3. The computer's battery needs replacing. There is a battery in your computer that can go bad. Ask a professional in your area about replacing it.

You might have crashed your computer. If your computer is running slowly, then it is probably what happened. If you just want it to stop restarting itself, go to Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>See Basic information about your computer>Advanced>Start up and recovery settings> Then under system failure, uncheck the box that says automatically restart.

Yes. It is rebooting. Just change the setting to say shut down instead of reboot.
