Probably because of what are called the Santa Ana winds. They are generated this time of year because of seasonal high pressure in the desert.

At this time of the year large low pressure systems in the pacific thrust themself in land further south along the west coast, followed by a high pressure system,by this happening a low pressure area sometimes form or move over the south western section of that area (geographically speaking on a large scale),but what really causes the wind spead to pick up is the tightening of gradient in between the high pressure system, that is aloaf in the Rocky mountains to your north east and the low prssure to your south or south west as the systems gets too close to each other.

Sometimes its just a local facter that may strengthen this, such as the land cooling more rapid than the Pacific Ocean,as the Oceans tends to lose heat alot slower than its land counter part,at night, there fore it creates a localize wind effect.
