I wasn't aware that only Republicans were in Iraq. That would be quite a logistical accomplishment for the Army to deploy only conservatives to a combat zone. The Dems should be thankful to them.
The conflict between Sunni and Shia has been going on for centuries. The current problems in Iraq are being inflamed by outside influences. Syria (Sunni) on one side and Iran (Shia) on the other. Both sides want their theology to prevail in Iraq so they can exert some influence over the country. Both sides want the U.S. to fail.
If you had paid any attention to the news lately, you'd know that the Administration says we are neither winning or losing in Iraq. The situation there is kind of hovering right now. That is the reason for the change in strategy and military leadership over there. What we were doing was obviously not working, so we're going to try something that has been proven to work. We will be using a system based on what Rudy Guiliani did in New York City to reduce crime there. Up to now, we would move into an area, pacify it, and move on. As soon as we leave, the bad guys move back in. Under the new strategy, we leave soldiers to hold the pacified areas thus denying the bad guys the opportunity to retake the area. We can push them out of Baghdad that way. Assuming, of course, that the Iraqi Government cooperates. That is why Republicans think they are winning in Iraq. Because there is a feasible plan in place with defined objectives that can be accomplished. I have yet to hear anything similar from any Dem anywhere.
Apologies for the soapbox. Sometimes when I get wound up, its hard to shut it down.

Your naive to think that its a civil war going on, that's what CNN wants you to think. And the casualties are very low for a war, just go into the history books and look at the casualties for Vietnam, Korea, WW2. Iraq is not a country ruled by tribes, it has cities and normal people.

Different people base winning in Iraq on different factors. Why there is much confusion over this. It's a stretch to say Republicans "think they are winning in Iraq."
Personally, I think that as long as Ahmanijehad is kept out of Iraq, we are winning.

From the answers I have read, do you people even understand what a defeat means to the US, the Iraqi people, to the people in the region, to the global economy? I think around 70% of the people have no fukn clue!

Right now, we're not winning. We're not losing but we aren't getting ahead, either. You'll see a change in that soon enough.
I can tell you that I'm on the way to making great strides in winning from my foxhole.
We can still win this peace.

Impeachment is the only course of action for Democrats. We are not winning in Iraq, victory nor defeat do not apply in a occupation.

I don't know if Republicans believe this. Only some of them can't admit we are mired down in a civil war with few options and none of them very attractive.

We accomplished our objective - to get rid of Saddam.
Then we had to stick around to give the Iraqi's time to find their feet.
Time to go now.
Winning isn't even a consideration.
