OK, with a pry bar I can pretty much pull the shaft out of the ps pump with the belt still on so Im guessing I have a broken shaft and a bad pump. How difficult is this to replace? How do I determine if I have hydro boost or vacuum boost? Its and 02 z71 4x4. Any help would be appreciated.

first answer was mostly correct. hydro boost refers to your power brake assist. with hydro boost the power steering pump makes assist for your brakes. there would be a power steering pressure hose from pump to a hydro boost between firewall and master cylinder. a vacume boost recieves assist from engine vacume, usually denoted by hose. hydra boost is usually used on 3/4 and 1 ton heavy duty trucks. also if ya get a pump with a reservoir ya will not have to mess with sealing the pump to the tank.

as far as the power steering pump, you will need a pulley puller to remove it from the shaft.. might be hard since shaft is broken, and then you will need a pump, without the reservior, if available.. just loosed the tension and remove belt. disconnect hoses, and unbolt pump assembly.. , as far as hydro or vacuum, this applies to the rack and pinion..will look up more informatin on this and get back to you..

If the belt remains sturdy i might verify the pump shaft. it is going to look established yet after removing the belt it is undemanding to verify. merely grab the pulley and turn it and attempt to pull outward on it. It shoud circulate little or no (in or out). i've got seen this situation trick some surprisingly sturdy mechanics by way of fact the belt will carry the shaft in place keeping it from leaking. sturdy success!
