If you go into the deep you will find that everything has a purpose. However stupid a creation seems it acts as a balancing force. Nature has its own subtle ways to do anything. Its agents might not be salient but are very potent. One simple reason for sex is creation of progeny and extension of the clan. Now you can say that if pleasure were not associated with it then also this purpose could be satisfied. However lust aids in natural selection... remember the Darwinian theory of the survival of the fittest... the strongest male chooses the fairest female or the vice versa and produces a progeny that carries the qualities of both.
