shut the door in someone's face, if they're talking to me, like I'm an idiot? I hate it when people talk down to me. Would I be in the right to shut the door on them and refuse to finish the conversation?

I have done this before.. some people just push things too far..so shutting the door on them might not feel right but you are only letting them know you won't take their crap.. SHUT THAT DOOR

heck no, I used to get solictors all the time at my old place. I've slammed many doors on many faces. Why put up with bullsh*t at your home??

Yes it would be rude. I would try and be polite, getting out of that situation as quickly as possible.
