I agree with Michelle A: the literacy rate for Cuba is almost as high as that for the US but not higher. However, it is still amazing for a poor and formerly semi-colonized country to have achieved such a feat and they have done equally well in health care and medical research also. Those, in spite of the many decades of economic embargo by the US.
Of course, many Americans and most Cuban-Americans do not want to believe in anything the Cuban nation has accomplished in the last 47 years for fear that would be an endorsement of Fidel Castro and Communism. Actually, Cuban-Americans could take pride in their fellow compatriots' successes without having to give credits to Fidel.
Just say the Cuban people are so ingenious and industrious, they've accomplished in many fields in spite of Castro's rule. That way, they (Cuban-Americans) can recognize the greatness of the Cuban people and at the same time, take a swipe at their nemesis. As it is now, they constantly have to wish their people ill in order to be able to discredit their enemies, Fidel and his colleagues. Muy mal!!

According to the CIA-WORLD FACT BOOK it is close but USA is more literate than Cuba
People Cuba
Literacy:
definition: age 15 and over can read and write
total population: 97%
male: 97.2%
female: 96.9% (2003 est.)
People United States
Literacy:
definition: age 15 and over can read and write
total population: 99%
male: 99%
female: 99% (2003 est.)
additional:
Yes Castro's regime focuses on education and healthcare ( funny there is no medicine available) So many students do have the chance to become doctors, etc. they just get paid very poorly for it. Cuba is known as the "pearl" of the Carribean, and has always prided itself on being a beautiful, educated country. Fidel is actually VERY educated. (although a complete a hole) My husband is Cuban- came from Cuba when he was 19. So I have heard a lot about the education system.

It is possible Castros government focuses on education and health care,Even though there may not always be enough to eat. And the standard of living is not very good. This is mostly to do with relations between the USA and Castro stemming back from the cold war. perhaps venazuela will become the next Cuba.
Who knows
