It could be the beginning of labor but it could also be false labor pains (or your body preparing to have the baby soon). I would keep track of the pains and if you have any vaginal discharge that might suggest that your water broke. If you suspect that your water may have broke then go to the hospital, but if not just wait it out. 38 1/2 weeks is considered full term and you could have the baby without complications from prematurity. Good luck and enjoy your new baby!!

It could be braxton hicks - practice contractions your body does before the labor. I do not think it was real contractions or you would have had them again. ALSo since it was at night were you laying on your back? If you were you could have pinched a nerve because the baby is laying on your spine. The doctor told me to lay on my left side but when i sleep sometimes i move to lay on my back and all my legs tingle and go numb because the baby is on a nerve. A nerve could also cause pain. Good luck!

i believe what you are feeling is braxton-hicks contractions. i started feeling them when i was 29 weeks pregnant with both of my kids.i had both of my kids induced at 38 weeks.my second child was the worst.he laid low in my belly and caused me so much pain. true contractions are very very very painful.at least they were for me.but your body is getting ready for the birth the only way it knows heo and that is with light meaningless contractions.your cervix will start dilating and opening up soon.if this is your first then this can be a bit scary.i can't begin to tell you how many times i went to the hospital thinking i was in early labor.i think i just wanted it to be over with.the best part is when it is all over and the real fun begins.children really know how to keep you running in circles.i enjoy every minute of my madhouse.

I remember that there is a procedure for this occurrence. I "learned" it in child-birth class with my wife. I cannot remember much. If possible, try a warm, not hot, bath. Try to relax. I don't remember the rest. It is important to try to relax. Wait for the doctor if possible. I am sorry that I cannot remember more. My wife never got the chance to go into labor. Circumstances required a c-section first. I do remember that it is important to relax as much as possible. Try to not be frightened. Good luck.

They are called braxton hicks contractions. If the contractions weren't repetitive then they were not real. It happened to me with my second child. I also had to have a c-section because my baby was too big. By now she should have scheduled you for an appointment for the c-section. Usually they do the c-section about 2 weeks before your due date.

Sounds like a contraction, could just be regular old back pain though. If they aren't regular it's really nothing to worry about.
Try some yoga poses like downward facing dog to relieve back pain.

sounds like the genuine element to me. My contractions have been bearable on the start. And your already 38 weeks that's finished term, alot of human beings do not circulate 40 weeks. if your contractions have become closer mutually and extra painful, you could desire to make preparations to circulate to the wellbeing facility. Congrats!!

Probably false labor I had on like that the other day and OMG it was painful. If you get one again just lay back and relax and breathe it'll go away.

dont be upset. it is wonderful that you are having a baby. you can do a little walking so that the baby will go down near the cervix, which will help you ease out your delivery
