I might begin by saying, The spirit of the enlightenment cannot be understood without reference to Isaac Newtons Principia, a book based upon mathematical calculations that fundamentally changed the way we look at the world and mans place in it...

Newton showed that the movements of the planets and all physical phenomena can be explained through mathematical formulas. This really became the driving idea behind the enlightenment: that man can know the world around him through reason (not religion or superstition), and with that knowledge we could control the world and make it better. Though not all subsequent philosophes of the enlightenment were mathematicians, I think this was a philosophy they all shared. Math was the vehicle of human reason devoid of superstition. With this same spirit philosophes tackled larger social issues.
