As stated above, it is a defense mechanism, commonly referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Syndrome which acts as a shield; sometimes the mind is confronted with something it cannot deal with. It's the brain's way of protecting itself against a traumatic situation.

Fear of confrontation.

Could be they were taught the hard way by their parents and the old feelings of being powerless in the face of conflict spring up again.
Parents need to teach children EVERYTHING that will help them in their future life.
It is a shame that a lot of them ruin their children even before they get a chance to go out in th eworld.
