In ancient times, when mankind was going through it's infancy, a malefic force or person was depicted to him, that induced him in doing bad or evil things.
In our times when we are entering the maturity of the human race, we know that the malefic force once represented by a being, for pedagogical purposes, is none other than the EGO inside each one of us.
So to live without our ego, or at least to live with an ego reduced to it's minimum expression, is I think one of the biggest tasks of our lives.

Without your ego, there's no negotiation or resolution between your ID (conservative, moral, ethical and sense of order) and your SUPER-EGO (liberal, amoral, unethical and chaotic side).

It would be a state of schizophrenia/manic depressive : a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality and by significant social or occupational dysfunction. Demonstrating disorganized thinking, and experiencing delusions or hallucinations, in particular auditory hallucinations

you can never wander away from yourself. Even if you wish to, it is your self that is fueling the wish. Without yourself you could no longer wish to be away from yourself.
