I see at the SEMA show this year they had new 36" rims. Not sure if the bolt pattern will fit a Golf or not.

try going to a car accesories shop eg halfords or similar and they will tell you.remember if you keep the overall diameter of your new wheels and tyres the same as the old ones this will not affect your fuel consumption or any clearance problems eg arches. thats why when you see other peoples cars with alloys on them they always have low profile tyres on them.this way you can increase the size of wheel by adding a smaller tyre.

The best, in engineering terms (i.e. providing the best ride, roadholding, handling, performance, etc.) will be those specified as standard equipment by the engineers during the car's development.

Anything larger will result in compromises of some description (ride, handing and roadholding on bumpy roads, turning circle, suspension travel) which the engineers deemed unacceptable.

I see that these days VW is putting 18" rims on as OE. This is purely for people who think such things actually look good though as it actually DETRACTS from performance and functionality while unnecessarily increasing costs. Pure vanity.

Bigger wheels = wider tires = more friction = more petrol consumption = increased running costs for no benefits (unless you drive off road or in heavy snow regularly).
