Seriously, it depends on how far you drop it from and what surface it hits. I've dropped mine a lot on tile and concrete and nothing is wrong with it yet. They're pretty sturdy in my experience.

Most of the earlier iPods (up to but not including the modern Nano units) had hard drives in them. That is a moving part and very sensitive to G-Forces. Those types of units do NOT do well in a fall situation since the g-forces stress the heads and platters isnide the drive. The newer units, like the 2nd Gen Nanos have flash memory and no moving parts. They seem to do better with a fall.

Depends on HOW FAR I guess....

Dont test it. If you run, and you need something to prevent it from breaking if it falls, get a metal case. If you need something to prevent it from scratches, get a plastic clear case (I have the Agent 18 Case and it works great to prevent scratches!). The answer to your question- Yes. It will break. On cement: Crack. On carpet: temperarily dead (recharge it to get its life back again).
