Spam is the equivalent to junk mail on your computer, except it can be a little more difficult to toss it in the trash. It can come from websites (pop-ups) or emails (often unsolicited emails). Viruses come in many different forms, but they are typically programs installed on your computer (from email files that you might open, from websites that you may visit, or even via these pop-ups and from spam...viruses from spam is relatively new, some call it "malware").

You should take the following steps at the very least to protect against Spam and viruses:

1) If you are using a Windows Operating System (XP, 2000, ME, etc), ensure you go to the Microsoft website and get ALL of the updates (security updates are put on the site constantly)
2) Use a Firewall (this is the software equivalent of a gateguard for information coming into and going out of your computer); Windows XP has an Internet Firewall but you can obtain FREE firewalls online such as Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) for personal use. This is an extremely important step. Your computer has approximately 65,000 doors (ports) where data can come and go...the Firewall closes them all to any unwanted traffic.
3) Use an anti-virus program such as Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee. There are also freeware anti-virus programs available for download, and they generally work quite well.
4) Protect against Spam and ads with a program like Lavasoft's "Ad-Aware." It is free for personal use for download, and it will clean your system of all hidden "cookies" and other hooks it may find on the hard drive. There is a fee version which runs in real-time, blocking any ads or cookies that a site might try to throw on your computer.

Spam, is unwanted and unsolicited E-mail (e.g advertising something). The name actually comes from a song from the Monty Python comedy series entitled "Spam spam spam spam".
Viruses are 'pups' potentially unwanted programes, which attach themselves to email, or anything you download. Viruses slow down your machine or close it down completely.

You can get free antivirus from court.co.uk, and it is called AVG.
But some broadband providers will already have you protected from viruses.

Spam is unsolicited emails and viruses are programs that run in the background on your PC doing various nasty things like for example deleting files, and generally messing up your PC.
a spam guard simply moves suspected spam mail to a different folder so you don't have to trawl through rubbish to read your genuine mail. ant-virus checks your PC for virus infected files and removes/quarantines them rendering them inert.
