Look and see what Robert Redford and Richard Gere are wearing. Nothing with a black rim though. At the glasses store they have pictures with people wearing different frames. Check them out and see what looks good on him.

Squarish shape, thicker temples not too deep. Probably go for metal as it is not so bold and directional.
Avoid:
rimless - aging
half glasses down nose - stern and aging

50 yrs old is not that old nowadays. Go for the rimless ones. Make sure they are what you like.

Kind of horn-rimmed glasses, I'm guessing, most likely square-shaped. Either silver or black ^_^
