Cavemen is actually correct, if you are just asking about swimming around. If you are asking about swimming as a competitive sport, then perhaps the first race was in 1844.

Actually, it's not so much an invention as a natural urge. If you throw a new born baby into water (which I'm not suggesting you do), it will attempt, quite successfully, to swim. However, as it grows up, this skill will be lost unless they continue to do it.

When you were in your mummies tummy you were in a bag of water, so you spent all of that time swimming, the white greasy stuff on new born babies is to keep them water proof. As for the different strokes no idea
